How to find unique Airbnb accommodations

Most of you will have heard about Airbnb — the online broker that enables people to lease or rent short-term lodging. When I can’t locate a suitable eco-lodge for a particular destination, I often search Airbnb, as I like the local feel of many of the places advertised there. There are countless offers all over the world, and some are so special I’m sometimes tempted to just rent them for the accommodation, regardless of the destination. But how does one actually find unique Airbnb accommodations without wasting hours on the internet?

During one of my recent online searches, I discovered a little hack for this, which I’ll share with you here. To give you an idea of the kind of special lodging options I’m referring to, here are a few samples:

In the old days there used to be a filter function on Airbnb that helped one find unique Airbnb accommodations, but it’s gone. However, after a lot of research, I found a work-around. You just have to add a little snippet in the browser window.

Here’s how it works:

1. Go to Airbnb’s website.

2. In your brower window, add this to the end of the url:

/s/homes?type=x

replace “x” with your choice of accommodation, such as:

  • boat
  • cabin
  • castle
  • cave
  • island
  • lighthouse
  • loft
  • plane
  • tent
  • tipi
  • train
  • treehouse

If you chose “cabin”, the complete url would for example be: https://www.airbnb.com/s/homes?type=cabin

3. Once you hit the enter/return key, the url will change, and an automatic addition will appear at the end that might make it look like this:

https://www.airbnb.com/s/homes?type=cave&allow_override%5B%5D=&s_tag=6wPkxdiJ

Just ignore it, the right results will show up.

4. If you are searching for something in a specific area, at a specific time or for a certain number of people, update the search field in the very top of the page. This is optional, and will reduce the number of search results shown, so use it wisely.

Of course, search results are only as good as the criteria listed by the landlords. However, this little hack to find unique Airbnb accommodations proved to be so useful that I’ll be sure to remember it in the future.

Have fun searching and finding unique accommodations on Airbnb yourself, and if it’s your first time, make sure you click here. This link will let you claim a $41 discount on your first booking of at least $77,  and we’ll get a small commission that doesn’t affect your price but allows us to keep this website running.
